“We are seeing a gradual shift in private companies seeking traditional government CM-PM firms with secure government client experience,” says Leigh Valudes, vice president of Markon Solutions. Many of these private companies are defense contractors establishing offices in the U.S. and globally, driven by concerns over anti-terrorism/force protection (AT/FP) design and construction.
Private owners are increasingly prioritizing employee safety, as many companies and executives face real threats that require proactive security measures. Valudes notes that while government clients adhere to AT/FP standards—such as Unified Facilities Criteria and Intelligence Community Directives—many commercial clients are unaware of these protocols. As a result, private-sector companies are turning to traditional third-party professional services for owner’s representation and construction management (CM) to identify designers and contractors with the credentials and expertise to develop secure campuses and buildings.
